Southwest Florida is known not only for its beaches, but also for its rich wildlife and peaceful outdoor spaces. Visitors often find themselves sharing the scenery with dolphins offshore, birds along the shoreline, and manatees during the cooler months.
Lovers Key State Park
A favorite for visitors who enjoy nature at a relaxed pace. Dolphins are frequently spotted swimming just offshore, especially in the early morning or later in the afternoon when the park is quieter. Birdlife is abundant here as well, with pelicans, herons, egrets, and osprey commonly seen along the shoreline and trails.
Manatees can also be seen at Lovers Key, though sightings are seasonal. The best chance is during the cooler months, typically November through March, when water temperatures drop and manatees move into calmer areas. Early mornings offer the best opportunity to spot them, along with fewer crowds and cooler temperatures.
Manatee Park:

Manatee Park is the top destination. During December through February, manatees gather here to enjoy warm water, making sightings much more consistent.
The park’s boardwalks and observation areas make viewing easy and comfortable, particularly for those who prefer shorter walks. Late morning to early afternoon on cooler days is often an ideal time to visit.
Dolphins and Birds All Year Long
Dolphins live in Southwest Florida year-round and are often seen from beaches, fishing piers, and calm waterways. Bird watching is also excellent throughout the year, with winter bringing additional migratory species that add to the variety.
